Evidently, Everton are in the market for a new midfielder, as they face the prospect of losing Amadou Onana to Aston Villa this summer. According to reports, the Belgian midfielder is edging closer to a £50 million move to Villa Park, leaving Sean Dyche with a gaping hole in his midfield.

Midfield battles are a crucial aspect of Premier League games

Kalvin Phillips, currently at Manchester City, could be the answer to Dyche’s prayers. Phillips has had a tumultuous time at the Etihad Stadium, making just 31 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side since his £42 million move from Leeds United. The 28-year-old midfielder was not selected for the European Championship by Gareth Southgate and has made just six starts for the Sky Blues. Despite this, he was rewarded with a Premier League medal in May.

Phillips’ career has stalled at Manchester City, and a move to Everton could be just what he needs to revive his fortunes.

With Everton reportedly registering their interest in Phillips, it’s clear that Dyche is willing to give the midfielder a fresh start. Phillips has been linked with a move away from City, and the Toffees could be the perfect destination for him.

Kalvin Phillips in action for West Ham

Phillips did enjoy a brief spell on loan at West Ham earlier this year, making eight appearances in the Premier League and twice in the UEFA Europa League. However, a hamstring injury forced him to return to the Etihad Stadium before the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Despite interest from Everton, Phillips is currently expected to travel with Manchester City for their four-match tour of the United States later this month. Guardiola’s side will face Celtic, AC Milan, Barcelona, and Chelsea in a series of friendlies.

For now, it seems that Phillips’ future remains uncertain. Will he take the opportunity to revive his career at Everton, or will he opt to stay at Manchester City and fight for his place? One thing is clear - the 28-year-old midfielder has a lot to prove.
