Marseille Move Closer to Landing Manchester United Winger Mason Greenwood

Marseille’s pursuit of Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood has taken a significant step forward, with the 22-year-old expected to undergo a medical ahead of a £25.19 million transfer, according to reports.

Greenwood’s turbulent times at Manchester United are set to come to an end.

Despite not playing for United since January 2022, Greenwood was briefly seen at the club’s training ground last week, where he was informed of the club’s intention to part ways. The winger has now reportedly agreed to terms with the Ligue 1 club, which includes add-ons and a sell-on clause of 50% of any future transfer fee.

Greenwood’s career has been marred by controversy, with the player being charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour in October 2022. However, the charges were dropped five months later after key witnesses withdrew their co-operation and new material came to light.

During his loan spell at Getafe last season, Greenwood managed 10 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions. Getafe president Angel Torres had hoped to keep the one-time England international for another year but hinted that United were looking to sell if a suitable offer came along.

Backlash Expected from Marseille Fans

If the deal does go through, Marseille can expect a backlash from their fans. The city’s mayor, Benoit Payan, has already expressed his disapproval of the deal, stating that Greenwood ‘cannot have his place on this team.’ Payan’s views align with the values of OM and Marseille, which are built on principles that Greenwood’s past actions do not reflect.

Marseille finished a disappointing eighth in the league last season, and the addition of Greenwood is likely to be met with resistance from fans. However, new OM boss Roberto De Zerbi has praised Greenwood’s abilities, saying: ‘Mason is a world-class player, but we have not recruited him yet.’

De Zerbi has also commented on his approach to handling players’ private lives, saying he treats his players like sons and would never attack them in public. If Greenwood does make the move to Marseille, it will be interesting to see how De Zerbi handles the situation.

A New Chapter for Greenwood

The proposed move to Marseille could be the fresh start Greenwood needs to revitalize his career. The winger’s talent is undeniable, and a change of scenery could be just what he needs to get back on track.

Marseille will be hoping to improve on their eighth-place finish last season.
