Premier League 2023-24: The Season in Review
The curtains have finally fallen on the 2023-24 Premier League season, and what a season it has been! Manchester City’s dominance continued as they clinched their fourth consecutive title, while Arsenal’s impressive campaign saw them finish as runners-up. But the season was not just about the top two; there were plenty of twists and turns throughout the campaign.
The Premier League 2023-24 season will be remembered for its high-scoring matches and intense title race.
Team of the Season
As the season comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the standout performers. Our Team of the Season features a mix of players from the top four, as well as some surprise inclusions from the lower reaches of the table.
Goalkeeper: Jordan Pickford (Everton)
England’s No. 1 had his best Everton season, keeping 13 clean sheets and making 117 saves. While David Raya won the Golden Glove due to Arsenal’s strong defensive resilience, Jordan Pickford fell short of just three clean sheets to win it despite fighting for relegation.
Jordan Pickford’s impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Right Back: Ben White (Arsenal)
Ben White’s impressive performance this season has shown that right-back is no longer a position of concern for Arsenal. Jurrien Timber’s ACL injury earlier in the season raised eyebrows and caused concern in the back line. But White stepped up, disproving earlier doubts. Further, the ex-Brighton player’s consistent performance in the Premier League has established himself as an excellent right-back.
Ben White’s consistency earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Centre-Back: William Saliba (Arsenal)
Arsenal’s defence has been outstanding this season. So, another defender from the Gunners’ side is not a surprise. William Saliba has played every minute, a first for an outfielder in the club’s Premier League history. While there is some debate about who is better between Saliba and his partner Gabriel Magalhaes, Saliba edges out this time.
William Saliba’s impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Centre-Back: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
Although Jurgen Klopp’s farewell season at Liverpool could not be as eventful as they once thought, the Reds still ended with a Carabao Cup. Their skipper, Virgil van Dijk dominated the defence, winning over 80% of his aerial duels.
Virgil van Dijk’s impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Left Back: Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City)
The left-back position was the 4Peat winners’ weakest! Despite Andy Robertson’s high WhoScored rating and strong seasons from Antonee Robinson and Vitaliy Mykolenko, we have chosen Josko Gvardiol as our Left Back in the TOTS.
Josko Gvardiol’s impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Midfielder: Rodri (Manchester City)
Despite a remarkable season, including a crucial final-day goal against West Ham, Rodri was astonishingly not nominated for Premier League Player of the Year. His exceptional ball control, positioning, defensive skills, and added goals and assists make him unmatched in his position, yet he was overlooked for the award.
Rodri’s impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Midfielder: Declan Rice (Arsenal)
Declan Rice makes a strong case for ‘signing of the season’! He has smoothly melted into this Arsenal squad and how? Joining England teammates Bukayo Saka and Aaron Ramsdale after leading West Ham to a Europa Conference League victory in Prague, performance pressure did not even get to him.
Declan Rice’s impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Midfielder: Martin Odegaard (Arsenal)
Odegaard has admirably guided Arsenal’s title challenge with his leadership and work-rate. He is third for chances created in the current Premier League season (95). Moreover, he has directly contributed to 16 of his team’s goals. Despite a delayed rise to prominence, Odegaard has convincingly established himself as one of the premier midfielders in the sport.
Martin Odegaard’s impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Right Wing: Cole Palmer (Chelsea)
Cole Palmer bested Chelsea legend Eden Hazard’s best-ever season in the Blue jersey in just his first season. Transitioning into a Chelsea squad in disarray, Palmer’s performance of 22 goals and 11 assists, propelled the team to sixth place.
Cole Palmer’s impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Striker: Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)
Though some may question Ollie Watkins over Erling Haaland, the English Villan had an outstanding season with 13 assists and 19 goals. Not including any Aston Villa players in our team of the season would have been a little unreasonable.
Ollie Watkins’ impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
Left Wing: Phil Foden (Manchester City)
In the final match against West Ham, Phil Foden showed why he earned the title of Premier League Player of the Year. His nineteen goals this season make him a key player.
Phil Foden’s impressive form earned him a spot in our Team of the Season.
The 2023-24 Premier League season will be remembered for its high-scoring matches and intense title race. As we look back on the season, our Team of the Season highlights the standout performers who made it a campaign to remember.
