Premier League Clubs Unanimously Vote to Continue Using VAR Next Season

The Premier League has announced that its clubs have voted overwhelmingly in favor of retaining the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for the 2024-25 season. The decision was made at the league’s annual general meeting in Harrogate, with 19 clubs voting in favor of continuing to use VAR, and only Wolverhampton Wanderers opposing its use.

VAR technology in action

The Premier League has acknowledged the need for improvements to the system, and has announced plans to introduce semi-automated offside technology in the autumn. This is expected to reduce the time taken for offside checks, and improve the overall fan experience.

In addition to the introduction of new technology, the Premier League has also committed to enhancing the fan experience of VAR by providing big-screen replays of all VAR interventions where feasible. The league will also collaborate with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) on more robust training for officials, focusing on speed while maintaining accuracy.

The Premier League has also stated that it will continue to lobby the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to permit live video and audio broadcasts during VAR reviews.

The decision to continue using VAR has been welcomed by many, who see it as an important tool in ensuring that correct decisions are made on the pitch. However, others have expressed concerns about the system, citing delays and inconsistencies in its application.
