Samartex: The Unlikely Champions of Ghana Premier League
As I sat in the stands at the Nsenkyire Sports Complex, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement as Samartex was crowned the champion of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League campaign. The Timber Giants, as they are affectionately known, had done the unthinkable - they had won their first-ever Ghana Premier League title.

The journey to the top was not an easy one. Samartex had to work tirelessly to secure their spot at the top of the table. And on the final day of the season, they faced off against Accra Lions in a coronation match that would decide their fate. The atmosphere was electric, with the Samreboi crowd cheering on their team with every fiber of their being.
The game was a nail-biter, with Emmanuel Mamah scoring a stunning goal in the 3rd minute to give Samartex the advantage. The team went into recess with a 1-0 lead, but it was Ebenezer Papa Ocran’s brilliant goal in the 87th minute that sealed the deal for the hosts. The final score was 2-0 in favor of Samartex, and the team erupted in joy as they celebrated their historic win.

As the champions of the Ghana Premier League, Samartex will take home a whopping GH₵837,500,000 in prize money. Accra Lions and Berekum Chelsea, who finished in second and third positions, will receive GH₵200,000 and GH₵100,000, respectively.
As I looked around at the jubilant Samartex players, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and admiration for this team that has worked so hard to achieve greatness. They truly deserve their moment in the spotlight, and I have no doubt that they will continue to make Ghana proud in the CAF Champions League campaign next season.
