A New Hope for Scotland’s Striker Dilemma?
As the dust settles on Scotland’s disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, fans are left wondering what could have been. The team’s lack of firepower up front was evident, with only two goals scored in three group games. But could a solution be on the horizon?
Scotland’s national team has been crying out for a prolific striker.
Enter George Hirst, the 25-year-old Ipswich Town striker who has been making waves in the English football league. With seven goals in 29 appearances last season, Hirst has proven himself to be a capable goal-scorer. And, as it turns out, he has a Scottish connection through his grandfather.
Hirst has been in fine form for Ipswich Town.
Hirst’s father, David, was a legend at Sheffield Wednesday, scoring over 100 goals for the club. But it’s his grandfather’s Scottish roots that could pave the way for George to switch national allegiance and answer Scotland’s striker SOS.

Hirst’s journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. After coming through the ranks at Sheffield Wednesday, he moved to Belgian Second Division side OH Leuven before being signed by Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City. Loan spells at Rotherham, Portsmouth, and Blackburn followed, before he finally found his feet at Ipswich Town.

With Steve Clarke’s contract running until the end of the World Cup, he’ll need to find a solution to Scotland’s attacking woes. And with Hirst’s eligibility and form, he could be the answer to their prayers.

As Scotland looks to rebuild and move forward, the possibility of George Hirst donning the blue of Scotland is an intriguing one. Could he be the hero they need?
‘I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help the team,’ Hirst said in a recent interview. ‘If that means switching allegiance, then so be it.’
Could George Hirst be the answer to Scotland’s striker prayers?
Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – Scotland needs a hero, and George Hirst could be the man to answer their call.
