As the dust settles on Jurgen Klopp’s departure, Liverpool supporters are cautiously optimistic that Arne Slot can build on the foundations left behind by his predecessor. But one bold move could make all the difference in the Reds’ quest for Premier League glory.

With Joel Matip’s departure confirmed, Jarell Quansah will be hoping to step up and become the first-choice centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk. However, Slot may feel that another centre-back is required to bolster the squad.

But it’s at the other end of the pitch where the new Reds boss may see some long-term value in spending big. Despite featuring in wide positions for most of the campaign, Mohamed Salah ended the season as the club’s top goalscorer once again, with 25 goals to his name. Darwin Nunez will look back on his first season with some satisfaction after scoring 18 goals, but the introduction of a new striker could well deliver a new focus for Slot and give his newly inherited side a boost as they look to improve on their third-place finish.

One current Premier League frontman who could well depart his current employers after enjoying a highly successful two-year spell with the club is Julian Alvarez. The Argentine striker has become a two-time Premier League winner, a Champions League Final winner, an FA Cup winner, a UEFA Super Cup winner, and a FIFA World Club Cup winner, and was also part of the Argentina squad that became World Cup winners in Qatar during the winter of 2022.

Although Premier League experience should be viewed as preferential rather than essential, Alvarez’s impressive statistics for Manchester City - 36 goals and 18 assists in 103 appearances - suggest he could be a valuable addition to the Liverpool squad. His flexibility, having played as a secondary striker, winger, and lead frontman, could well play into Liverpool’s hands given the fluid approach Slot could well implement at the club.

With the likes of Salah and Diaz capable of taking on the lead role in attack, Alvarez could dovetail with the duo to create a formidable attacking force. The question is, will Slot take the bold step of making a £60m move for the Argentine striker?

Julian Alvarez

Only time will tell, but one thing is certain - the addition of Alvarez could be the spark that ignites Liverpool’s title challenge next season.
