The Future of VAR in the Premier League: Is It Time to Scrap the Technology?

The use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in the Premier League has been a topic of controversy since its introduction in the 2019-20 season. Now, Wolverhampton has submitted a resolution to scrap the use of VAR, citing “numerous unintended negative consequences” that are damaging the relationship between fans and football. The proposal will be discussed at the league’s annual general meeting on June 6, and if at least 14 of the 20 clubs vote in favor, VAR can be removed.

Wolverhampton’s decision to table the resolution comes after careful consideration and respect for the Premier League, PGMOL (referees body), and fellow competitors. The club believes that the price paid for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of the game, and as a result, they should remove it from the 2024/25 season onwards.

However, the Premier League believes that scrapping VAR would lead to an increase in the number of incorrect decisions. According to the league, the number of correct decisions made in games has risen from 82% prior to the introduction of VAR to 96% this season.

The Debate Continues

Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has spoken out against VAR, saying it’s “taking all the enjoyment out of the game.” Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon has also been scathing of VAR, saying it’s “not working” and that “either get rid of it or get better.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has backed the scrapping of VAR, saying he’d prefer referees to make decisions on the pitch. “I think there are more positives (in removing VAR) than negatives,” he said.

The debate around VAR is far from over, and the future of the technology in the Premier League hangs in the balance. Will the clubs vote to scrap VAR, or will they continue to use it in the hopes of improving the accuracy of refereeing decisions?
