The Uncertain Future of Hong Kong Football
The recent self-relegation of Resources Capital Football Club (RCFC) from the Hong Kong Premier League has sent shockwaves through the football community. The club’s decision to quit the top division has left players, fans, and stakeholders wondering about the future of the sport in the city.
A Difficult Way to Live
RCFC midfielder Jerry Lam Lok-yin, an under-23 international, was “shocked” to learn about the club’s decision through the newspapers. He expressed his disappointment and frustration, saying that the uncertainty surrounding football in Hong Kong makes it a “difficult way to live” as a professional player.
“I heard [about self-relegation] from the newspapers, and was shocked. I am upset for the club.”
Lam, who is close to securing a new contract with another HKPL club, emphasized the need for a more professional environment in Hong Kong football. He highlighted the lack of resources and infrastructure, citing the absence of GPS monitors to track running distances and intensity.
The Call for Legalized Gambling
Lam joined the growing chorus of voices calling for the legalization of gambling on local matches. He believes that it would generate excitement and interest in the HKPL, which has struggled to attract fans and sponsors.
“I think it would be good for the league if we could have betting. It makes it more exciting.”
The government has maintained its stance against legalized gambling, citing concerns about match-fixing and the lack of demand. However, Lam and other players argue that it would be a step forward for the sport in Hong Kong.
A Dream to Represent Hong Kong
Despite the challenges, Lam remains committed to his dream of representing Hong Kong at the senior level. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of his brother, Jordan, who made his senior debut this year.
“My dream is to play for the Hong Kong representative team. I have to work hard to go where I can earn good money.”
As the football community in Hong Kong navigates this uncertain period, players like Lam are determined to push forward and make a name for themselves in the sport.
