The University of Ange: Postecoglou’s Coaching Tree Continues to Flourish
Ange Postecoglou’s commitment to nurturing Australian football talent has led to the appointment of Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo as his new assistants at Tottenham Hotspur. The duo, who masterminded the Central Coast Mariners’ stunning A-League renaissance, will join Postecoglou’s staff, enhancing the already strong Mariners flavor at Spurs.

Montgomery and Raimundo’s success at the Mariners, where they achieved an unlikely 6-1 victory over Melbourne City in the 2023 grand final, caught Postecoglou’s attention. Despite a brief stint at Hibernian in Scotland, they now have the opportunity to re-establish themselves within British football under Postecoglou’s watchful eye.
The appointment continues Postecoglou’s tradition of providing opportunities to talented coaches from Australia who might not have gotten a chance abroad. Montgomery, born in Leeds, spent most of his playing career with Sheffield United before moving to Australia as an import player with the Mariners in 2012 and becoming a citizen in 2017. Raimundo, Portuguese, once worked at Benfica and met Montgomery on a coaching course.
Postecoglou has spoken glowingly about Montgomery and Raimundo’s achievements at the Mariners, praising their shrewd recruitment, attacking-minded tactics, and youth focus. The duo’s success has helped unearth or further develop talented players like Garang Kuol, Nectar Triantis, and Josh Nisbet.

The departure of Chris Davies to Birmingham City has enabled Postecoglou to add to his coaching staff, with Montgomery and Raimundo joining Jedinak, Ryan Mason, and Rob Burch. Matt Wells has been promoted to senior assistant.
Spurs finished fifth last season, missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification, but will be one of the favorites to win the Europa League in its new ‘Swiss system’ format.

The appointment of Montgomery and Raimundo is a testament to Postecoglou’s commitment to nurturing Australian football talent. With Jedinak already on his staff, the north London club is becoming a hub for Australian coaches.
